Welcome Letter from Dr. Larry Bybee
Hello and welcome to MyXylitol
My name is Dr. Larry Bybee, and I have been in dental practice for over 30 years. For the last 13 years, I have limited my practice to treating children. In 2001 my partner, Dr. Russ Misner, asked me a simple question that began a nine year journey into researching and developing strategies for better oral health that patients can easily do at home.
He asked, “Do you think that we are seeing fewer cavities in our patients or do they have more cavities?”
My answer was, “definitely more cavities.” The frustrating part was that even though we were doing everything that was recommended by our dental societies, the decay rates seemed to be growing. The children that had cavities six months ago would have the same or more cavities when they came in for their 6 month check-up. We needed to try something else.
He then handed me an article written by Dr. Jonathon Wright that discussed the benefits of chewing xylitol gum. He sited the Turku gum studies as his evidence. The report and evidence were extremely positive.
We noticed that one of the companies manufacturing xylitol-based gum was in Utah, which was only a three hour drive from our office. We decided to take a road trip and learn more about xylitol sweetened products and how they were manufactured. Long story short, we came back with $1,300 worth of gum so we could begin patient research in our Kidds Dental office.
For the past 8 years we have developed an oral health program that incorporates xylitol in the daily maintenance of dental decay based on subjective and objective data that we gather at the child’s dental appointment. You can view these materials and learn more about xylitol office integration and our xylitol-based oral health program at www.adrdental.com
We worked with Spry Dental as consultants from 2001 – 2004, traveling to over 30 cities and presenting xylitol information at dental trade shows. We were also instrumental in the development of Spry’s dental gel formula. I can still remember mixing up the various ingredients in Dr. Misner’s kitchen, trying to get just the right consistency for our infant and toddler patients. We are excited and happy to share our knowledge, experience and products with people looking to improve their oral health. We know the benefits of using xylitol on a regular basis to reduce dental decay, and we see it everyday in our office. We encourage you to try xylitol and discover for yourself how this amazing natural product can promote better oral health and a great looking smile.
